The Golden Rule

If you know you'll be selling your business one day, there's a Golden Rule that should be at the forefront of your mind at all times:

Treat your business the way its' future owner would want you to treat it.

It's a simple concept, but it's easier said than done. By what measure are you to judge how well you're treating it? Comparing yourself and your business to others is dangerous. Comparison can make us lose focus and become discouraged. That's why I believe there's only one thing you can compare yourself to: perfection.

Although we'll never reach perfection, comparing ourselves to anything less is cutting us short of what we may be capable of. If you compare yourself to another business or entrepreneur, you might achieve a little of the success that they've had. But if you compare yourself to perfection, there's a chance you'll greatly surpass your own expectations.

Perfect your business. Constantly tweak your systems and upgrade your customer experience. When the time comes to sell and you receive that big check you'll be happy you followed The Golden Rule!
